Today, Representative Ted Budd voted in favor of the Email Privacy Act. This bill will strengthen the Electronic Communications Privacy Act by treating electronic communications in a similar fashion to physical mail.

“The Founders were deliberate in creating a zone of privacy through the 4th Amendment that could only be penetrated with probable cause and a search warrant granted by a judge.  In recent years, we’ve gotten away from that standard with regard to our electronic communications.  Since around 90 percent of our mail is now electronic, it makes sense that we strengthen our privacy laws in order to treat e-mail similarly to paper letters.  The E-mail Privacy Act would get us closer to that standard, and I was proud to support the bill.”
